Management decisions for estuarine settings have often been based on the mistaken assumption that low energy conditions result in stability. This perception is exacerbated by persistence of historic works, and in some locations, presence of ancient features. However, estuarine settings are dynamic, responding to changing conditions and human activities. Understanding the nature and pathway of these responses is crucial to our future decision-making, particularly in response to predicted changes to climate and sea level.
