Mangroves occupying the critical upper intertidal zone can provide wave and flow damping that helps to provide coastal protection. However, they require certain conditions to thrive and fulfill this role.
Kudos to Vic Semeniuk, Eric Wolanski and Colin Woodroffe for their extensive studies on Australian mangrove dynamics, which provide a foundation with which to explore mangrove-based NBS.
