Scour is a 'tricky' coastal problem, which needs to be considered for most coastal structures. Process-response relationships derived under sustained forcing can become unreliable when applied to the short-term conditions driving scour.
Scour is developed by short-term hydrodynamics and sediment dynamics. This creates several challenges when trying to make scour predictions, sometimes requiring a change of thinking compared to 'typical' observation and analysis methods used for seabed change assessment.
