While artificial reefs and mangroves are widely acknowledged, NBS encompass a wider range of possible interventions for erosion or flooding mitigation. However, they are not direct substitutes for coastal defences. Any application must have a strong understanding of the active processes, and a recognition of both strengths and limitations of the NBS approach. In some cases, they are most effective as part of a suite of interventions.
This post was developed following a couple of interesting conversations in the last week - partly stimulated by recent work by Rebecca Morris and colleagues, although also acknowledging preceding work through the World Bank WAVES program, USACE and others. It is great to see the body of supporting science continue to grow. NBS needs to be approached with eyes wide open and realistic expectations of what different approaches can or can't achieve.
