The last 20 years has seen dramatic changes in our ability to better resolve coastal flooding hazard. However, despite this, we continue to be focused on old methods of assessment, based simply on water levels...
Flooding hazard is developed through a combination of water level, overland wave propagation and locally-generated currents. However, information limits have caused a focus only on water levels. Emerging understanding of overland processes and greater capacity for simulation should stimulate improving practices in assessment and management of coastal flooding.
