A widely experienced phenomenon already, increasing salinisation due to sea level rise has the capacity to affect a much wider area of coast than corresponding projected changes to erosion or inundation hazard.
The process of coastal salinisation has been given comparatively limited attention in Australian coastal hazard assessments and corresponding policy. Possibly it is seen as a small problem compared to the issues of decreasing catchment runoff and increased arid zone salinity, but it is a different problem, requiring different forms of mitigation.
